Zack Gelof's Position Switch: From Second Base to the Outfield (2026)

Zack Gelof: Could he become an outfielder?

The Athletics are reportedly planning to give Gelof more opportunities in the outfield this spring to boost his versatility and keep him in the lineup more often.

That plan makes sense. With offseason addition Jeff McNeil likely to take the bulk of second-base reps (and potentially slide over to third occasionally), Gelof isn’t likely to be penciled in at his primary position anytime soon unless an injury opens up a corner or middle infield role.

Right now, Gelof has only played second base in the majors. He originally started his pro career as a third baseman, so he does carry some minor-league experience at the hot corner. The A’s, however, remain unsettled at third, and Gelof hasn’t seen meaningful time there since 2022.

Putting him through spring reps at third made obvious sense at camp’s start, but Oakland seems aiming higher. Following the departure of Max Schuemann, the club doesn’t have a true super-utility option on the roster. If Gelof can add outfield time—especially center field—to his toolkit, the Athletics gain significant roster flexibility. It would also provide a cushion if younger talents like Colby Thomas, Carlos Cortes, or Junior Perez aren’t ready for a regular part-time role.

Other players have successfully shifted from the dirt to the grass in recent years. Notably, the Padres’ Jackson Merrill moved from shortstop to elite center field, and Tyler Soderström—once a catcher who became a Gold Glove finalist in left field—has shown similar adaptability. The Diamondbacks are also testing a position switch with their infield prospect, giving shortstop Jordan Lawler opportunities in center field this spring. Lawler and Merrill are known for their speed, and Gelof isn’t slow either, having swiped 25 bases two years ago.

This kind of position switch has been done before, and Gelof’s athleticism suggests he can handle the transition reasonably well as he acclimates to a new role. His hitting will ultimately determine how long he remains in the lineup, but expanding his defensive horizons beyond second base should only raise his value for the team this season.
