NRL Team List: A Fresh Start with Familiar Faces
The One New Zealand Warriors are gearing up for their season opener against the Sydney Roosters at the sold-out Go Media Stadium. This match promises an exciting clash, with a mix of seasoned players and a new addition to the team.
Leading the pack is Captain James Fisher-Harris, returning after a period of absence due to injury. He'll be joined by his trusted teammates, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Chanel Harris-Tavita, who have also recovered from minor setbacks. While Tuivasa-Sheck and Harris-Tavita approach the season with renewed vigor, Fisher-Harris recently led the Māori All Stars in a thrilling match against the Australian Indigenous All Stars, showcasing his leadership skills.
The only newcomer to the team is Morgan Gannon, a seasoned second rower who joins from the Leeds Rhinos. Despite his lack of familiarity with the team, he brings valuable experience, having made 73 appearances in the Super League and Challenge Cup since his debut in 2021. He'll take the field as Warrior #295, contributing to the team's depth.
Co-captain Mitchell Barnett remains on the sidelines, recovering from knee surgery, but is expected to return soon. Marata Niukore, who has been sidelined with a calf injury, will be available next week, while Luke Metcalf, Te Maire Martin, and Rocco Berry will require more time to recover from their respective injuries.
Ali Leiataua, returning to the NRL stage after a lengthy absence, will join Adam Pompey in the centers, having impressed during the trials with three tries. The backline remains largely unchanged from last season's playoff run against Penrith, while the starting forward pack features just one alteration, with Jacob Laban replacing Niukore in the second row.
The interchange bench is led by Sam Healey, Demitric Vaimauga, Tanner Stowers-Smith, and Leka Halasima, with Taine Tuaupiki and Gannon providing additional support. This new-look bench offers a blend of experience and youthful energy.
With Roger Tuivasa-Sheck set to make his 149th appearance for the Warriors this week, he'll be one game away from reaching his 150th appearance, a milestone to be celebrated against Canberra at Go Media Stadium in round two on March 13.
