Mexico's Baja California Sur, a popular tourist destination for Canadians, has introduced a new tax, the Embrace It Tax, which will impact travelers' budgets. This fee, introduced in June 2025, applies to foreign visitors staying over 24 hours in the region, including popular spots like Los Cabos and Cabo San Lucas. The tax, which generated over C$20 million in 2025, has increased from MX$470 to MX$488 per person, a rise of MX$18, or approximately C$1.40. The tax aims to improve security, infrastructure, and environmental protection, as stated on the Embrace It website. Visitors can pay online through the Travelkore platform, providing personal and travel details. The tax's success is noted by Hugo Chapoy Córdova, who highlights its positive reception among international visitors and the data showing orderly behavior and advance payments. This development comes as authorities considered a proposal for higher entry fees at Mexico's iconic sites, sparking discussions on the balance between tourism revenue and conservation efforts.
