Martian Manhunter's Arrival in DC's Man of Tomorrow - James Gunn's Teaser Explained (2026)

Martian Manhunter's DC Universe Debut Teased by James Gunn with Cryptic Photos

It seems another classic DC Comics superhero is joining the new DC Universe. Director James Gunn is hard at work on the pre-production of his upcoming movie, "Man of Tomorrow," a sequel to last year's "Superman." We know David Corenswet will reprise his role as Clark Kent/Superman, and Nicholas Hoult will return as Lex Luthor. Beyond that, the details remain shrouded in mystery, except for the confirmation that Lars Eidinger will portray the villain Brainiac. However, a recent cryptic post from Gunn hints at the imminent introduction of Martian Manhunter.

Gunn shared a set design image with the caption, "Set design in Chocos. #Superman." This subtle reference to Martian Manhunter's well-known love for Chocos cookies, a clear nod to the comic book character's preference for Oreos, is more than a mere coincidence. It suggests that Martian Manhunter will play a significant role in the movie.

In 2024, Gunn had previously hinted at Martian Manhunter's involvement and his peculiar Chocos cookie addiction. This time, the implication is stronger, leaving fans wondering if Martian Manhunter will have a major part in "Man of Tomorrow." Or, will he be introduced through subtle easter eggs and teasers?

The question remains unanswered for now, but Gunn's track record indicates he's carefully setting expectations for DC fans familiar with the character's history. Martian Manhunter, also known as J'onn, has a long-standing presence in DC Comics, having made his debut in "Detective Comics" #225 in 1955. Created by writer Joseph Samachson and artist Joe Certa, he has been a staple of the DC Universe, particularly as a member of the Justice League, for decades. The character also has a significant association with "Justice League International," a title that James Gunn is drawing inspiration from.

Martian Manhunter's familiarity extends beyond the comics. He has appeared in various media, including the animated "Justice League" TV series, "Smallville," and Zack Snyder's "Justice League," portrayed by Harry Lennix. George Miller also planned to include him in "Justice League: Mortal" before the project was scrapped.

Even if Martian Manhunter doesn't physically appear in Gunn's film, the DC Universe has numerous projects in the pipeline, such as "Supergirl" and "Clayface" this year, as well as "Lanterns" and "Booster Gold" in the works. As for "Man of Tomorrow," Gunn has ruled out a Wonder Woman appearance, so fans shouldn't expect a rushed or overwhelming introduction of characters like Martian Manhunter. However, if the character is indeed making his debut in this movie, we can expect an announcement on the casting front soon.

"Man of Tomorrow" is set to be released in theaters on July 9, 2027.
