Imagine this: just 39 seconds left on the clock, and the Winnipeg Jets are staring down a loss. But in a thrilling turn of events, they tie the game and then clinch the win in overtime! Mark Scheifele emerged as the hero, scoring the game-winning goal 2:06 into the extra period, capping off a three-point night that propelled the Jets to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks at Canada Life Centre on Tuesday.

The Jets’ comeback began with Cole Perfetti, who tied the game with just 39 seconds remaining in the third period. With goalie Connor Hellebuyck pulled for an extra attacker, Perfetti received a pass from Scheifele, turned, and fired a wrist shot past Blackhawks goalie Spencer Knight.
“We had a play in mind, and it kind of worked,” Perfetti explained. “I knew their centerman was close, so I focused on supporting Scheifele. I had just enough time to get around the puck and deliver it to the net. Sometimes, they just go in.”
And this is the part most people miss: The Jets’ third-period surge wasn’t just luck—it was a result of relentless effort. “We played with desperation,” Scheifele noted. “We held onto the puck, made plays, and generated chances. Everyone was supporting each other, coming in with speed, and it paid off.”
Scheifele’s overtime winner came after Dylan Samberg made a crucial play, knocking the puck away from Chicago’s Ryan Greene and feeding Scheifele, who scored with a wrist shot from above the left hash marks. “At first, I thought I’d be chasing a breakaway,” Scheifele admitted. “But Samby made an incredible play, and it turned into a great shot.”
For the Jets, Samberg also had a goal and an assist, while Hellebuyck made 18 saves. Winnipeg has now earned points in four straight games (2-0-2). Coach Scott Arniel praised his team’s third-period performance: “We did a way better job getting through the neutral zone, winning puck battles, and playing heavy. That’s what made the difference.”
On the other side, Connor Bedard recorded two assists for the Blackhawks, while Greene and Teuvo Teravainen scored. Knight made 29 saves, but Chicago has now lost four of their last five games. “We sat back a little bit when defending the lead,” Bedard observed. “That’s not a good recipe. We need to push forward and cycle the puck instead.”
Samberg opened the scoring at 3:59 of the first period with his first goal of the season, assisted by Scheifele. Teravainen tied it 1-1 on the power play late in the first, and Greene gave Chicago a 2-1 lead early in the third. But the Jets’ late-game heroics stole the show.

Bedard’s two assists matched Eddie Olczyk’s record for most assists by a Blackhawks player aged 20 or younger (115). Teravainen, fresh off a bronze medal with Team Finland at the 2026 Olympics, has points in four straight games since the break.
