Dinesh Karthik Roasts Atherton and Nasser Over India's Champions Trophy Victory: 'You Fossils Felt...'
Veteran Indian player Dinesh Karthik took a swipe at former England captains Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain, criticizing their comments made last year after India's Champions Trophy win in Dubai. Karthik argued that Pakistan, which had the same advantage as India, failed to capitalize on it in the T20 World Cup 2026, where they exited at the Super 8 stage. Atherton and Nasser had claimed that India's victory was due to an unfair advantage, playing all matches at one venue, and getting accustomed to the conditions in Dubai.
Karthik countered by pointing out that Pakistan had the same advantage but performed poorly in the T20 World Cup. He suggested that the advantage was not a skill issue but rather a matter of consistent preparation and familiarity with the conditions. Karthik's comments were made on the Sky Cricket Podcast, where he discussed the teams he was surprised didn't reach the World Cup semifinals, specifically mentioning Pakistan.
'I expected Sri Lanka and Pakistan,' Karthik said. 'Sri Lanka, because of the home conditions and their need for a bigger cause, but that didn't work out. Then I thought of Pakistan, who consistently played in Colombo, stayed in one hotel, and knew the same pitches. You fossils felt that was the main reason India won the Champions Trophy. By the same logic, Pakistan should have done something in this World Cup. It's clear that it works for one team but not for another, so there's a genuine lack of skill there.'
Both Pakistan and Sri Lanka were eliminated at the Super 8 stage. Sri Lanka, the 2014 champions, lost all their matches in the second round. Pakistan, despite beating Sri Lanka in their final Super 8 match, finished third due to a washed-out game against New Zealand and a defeat to England.
