Canada's recent tariff cut has sparked excitement in the automotive industry, especially for those eyeing high-tech Chinese electric vehicles (EVs). But here's the twist: this move could make a luxury SUV over 50% cheaper!
Lotus Technology, the renowned British sports car manufacturer, primarily owned by China's Geely group, is thrilled with Canada's tariff policy overhaul. In a press release, they revealed that the price of their Wuhan-manufactured Eletre SUV will plummet by a staggering 50% due to Canada's slashed import duties on Chinese EVs, dropping from a hefty 100% to a mere 6.1%.
This significant reduction is expected to boost demand instantly. Lotus anticipates exponential growth in wholesale deliveries of the Eletre as the tariff benefits kick in. The company's CEO, Qingfeng Feng, warmly embraced the new policy, emphasizing its role in fostering a fairer market for international auto brands.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the policy change, allowing up to 49,000 Chinese EV imports annually in exchange for reduced tariffs on specific Canadian exports to China. While this number is relatively small compared to Canada's overall auto market, the quota is set to expand, reaching approximately 70,000 EVs in the next five years.
Interestingly, the deal mandates that over half of these imports must be affordable models priced at $35,000 Canadian or less. However, it also accommodates premium vehicles, which has Lotus particularly enthusiastic. The Eletre, launched in Canada two years ago with a starting price of $126,800, now boasts an ultra-high-end version, the Eletre Carbon, priced at $313,500. This powerhouse packs a 905-horsepower dual-motor, accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in under three seconds, and offers an estimated 280-mile range.
The tariff cut wasn't intended to flood the market with six-figure EVs, but it presents an intriguing opportunity. If Lotus reintroduces the entry-level Eletre, the price reduction would make it a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y, with a more upscale and performance-oriented appeal.
And Lotus won't be the only one; other automakers are likely to follow suit with pricing adjustments as Canada's new tariff policy unfolds. This development promises to shake up the EV market, sparking debates about affordability, luxury, and the future of international auto brands in Canada.
