In a bold statement, Formant Studio unveils a listening room in Mexico City, celebrating the fusion of modern design and natural beauty. The studio's latest project, titled "Modular," is a testament to their innovative approach, transforming a shared office into a captivating audio-visual experience.
But here's the twist: the design revolves around the timeless elegance of birch wood. Formant Studio, a rising star in the design world, has crafted a unique listening lounge in collaboration with the occupants, Simple Moo and photographer Fabián Martínez. The space is a multi-sensory journey, where sound, architecture, and image intertwine seamlessly.
The team reveals their philosophy: "Sound, architecture, and image are interconnected layers." This concept is brought to life as the studio integrates bodily comfort, visual aesthetics, and sonic excellence. The original white walls remain, now complemented by a lush green carpet and a stunning birch burl veneer wall. This natural element becomes the focal point, enhancing the custom-made black oak speakers and stainless steel DJ booth.
And this is where it gets intriguing: the veneer features a performer-focused detail. A small oval cutout displays the artist's name digitally, adding a modern twist to the organic material. Additional speakers are seamlessly integrated into the veneer, creating a surround sound experience.
The use of stainless steel continues throughout, from the legs of the oak coffee table to the bar and console, adding a sleek contrast. At the heart of the room lies the custom social sofa, a masterpiece in itself. Its low-slung design, stainless steel legs, and black modular backrest create a striking visual against the green carpet.
The studio's vision is clear: "Steel-made furniture meets the ageless charm of birch, emphasizing the custom sofa designed for social gatherings." Formant Studio's attention to detail extends to the wall art, where Martínez's work is showcased within aluminum frames, suspended from the floor and ceiling.
The furniture selection is equally impressive, featuring LC2 armchairs, Toio Lamps, and a concrete coffee table by Creto, all tied together by decorative orbs from Ema Ceramics.
The unveiling of Modular during Mexico City Art Week was a celebration, attracting designers, architects, and media. Local DJs, including Sites, provided the soundtrack, having also performed at a gallery co-curated by Panorammma design studio.
This project contributes to the global trend of listening rooms, from pastel-hued spaces in German hotels to converted apartments in Romania. Fabián Martínez's photography captures the essence of this unique listening room, where nature meets cutting-edge design.
