To rugby enthusiasts, Barry John was an icon, a true king of the sport. But to Anna Powell, he was simply 'Dadcu,' her beloved grandfather from Wales. Despite being born and raised in Australia, Anna's connection to Wales runs deep, and her recent move back to her ancestral home is a testament to her passion for football and a desire to honor her family's roots.
Anna, now 20, grew up listening to tales of her grandfather's rugby exploits. However, it wasn't until she moved to Wales to join Gwalia United last month that she truly began to understand the magnitude of Barry John's legacy.
"My mom would tell us stories about him, but it was only when I came here that I realized how much of an impact he had. His name is still on everyone's lips, and it's as if he's still with us," Anna shared.

While Barry John is renowned for his rugby prowess, Anna's journey is all about football. She's a midfielder or forward with her eyes set on the Women's Super League (WSL) and, potentially, international football.

Anna's decision to pursue her football dreams in Wales is a testament to the power of family connections. Her parents, Lucy (one of Barry John's four children) and Meirion, left Wales for Australia in 2003, but the family's ties to Wales remained strong. Anna recalls her 'dadcu' as a calm and funny man who loved sharing stories and sweets with his grandchildren.
"He was so proud of Wales, but he never boasted about his own achievements. He praised everyone he played with, like [Sir] Gareth [Edwards] and JPR [Williams]. He talked about the joy of playing, not just his own accomplishments," Anna explained.
The idea of Anna playing rugby, like her grandfather, was discussed, but her passion for football prevailed. She's been a football fanatic since joining her local club, Fremantle City, about a decade ago, and even spent two years playing in Texas before making the move to Britain.
But it's not just about football for Anna. She's living with her grandmother, Janet (Barry John's widow), and uncle, and feels a deep connection to her extended family and her Welsh heritage.
"I feel so blessed to be here, to be a part of Wales and my original home. It's wonderful to know that I'm a part of this rich history," she said.
Anna's ultimate goals are clear: reach the WSL and play international football. But the question remains: would she represent Australia or Wales if given the chance?
"I love both countries. It's not just about my famous granddad; it's about the people, the life, and the history of Wales. It would be an incredible opportunity no matter what," Anna concluded.
