The long-awaited A417 'Missing Link' project is set to begin its first phase, with a series of weekend closures planned to pave the way for the new road's opening. This £460 million highways project will significantly enhance connectivity in Gloucestershire, and the initial segment will be a game-changer for local commuters.
On February 2nd, drivers will encounter a new one-lane section of the A417, extending from the A46 towards the Air Balloon roundabout. This section will require drivers to adjust their routes, as those descending the A417 at the bottom of the hill will be directed left towards the A46 junction and under a bridge. The road closures are scheduled for two weekends: January 16th to 19th and January 30th to February 2nd, allowing for crucial drainage, curb, pavement, and central reservation work.
During these closures, access to Cirencester via the A417, Leckhampton Hill, and the A436 will remain uninterrupted through the Air Balloon roundabout. Crickley Hill Country Park will also be accessible as usual. Additionally, an overnight closure of the A417 between the Air Balloon roundabout and The Highwayman Inn is planned from January 15th to 16th, further facilitating the project's progress.
The project's scope extends beyond the initial phase. In 2026, traffic will transition to the new A436, continuing through Cowley and Crickley Hill, utilizing the new road alignment, and accessing the newly constructed Shab Valley Interchange. National Highways has committed to planting 100,000 trees throughout the year and completing access road construction.
To keep the community informed, a public information event will be held at The George in Birdlip on January 13th, from 11:00 GMT to 14:30 GMT. The public is encouraged to attend and learn more about the project's progress and future plans.
